Law, and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Babcock was born on February 27, 1937 in Fort Riley, Kansas. She attended the University of Kansas, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in theater. She then went on to study at the Yale School of Drama, where she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. Babcock began her career in the theater, appearing in productions of The Seagull, The Crucible, and The Glass Menagerie. She made her television debut in the 1960s, appearing in episodes of The Defenders, The Virginian, and The Fugitive. She went on to appear in a number of television movies and miniseries, including The Executioner's Song, The Blue and the Gray, and The Thorn Birds. In the 1980s, Babcock began appearing in the television series Hill Street Blues, playing the role of Grace Gardner. She went on to appear in the series L.A. Law, playing the role of Judge Margaret Wilbur. She also appeared in the series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, playing the role of Dorothy Jennings. Babcock has also appeared in a number of films, including The Big Bus, The Great Waldo Pepper, and The Right Stuff. She has won two Emmy Awards for her work on Hill Street Blues and L.A. Law.
