He has written and produced songs for artists such as Sam & Dave, Isaac Hayes, and The Staple Singers. He has also written and produced music for films such as Shaft and The Color Purple. Porter has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Porter was born in 1941 in Memphis, Tennessee. He began his career as a songwriter and producer in the early 1960s, working with Stax Records. He wrote and produced many of the label's biggest hits, including Sam & Dave's "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Comin'", and Isaac Hayes' "Theme from Shaft". He also wrote and produced songs for The Staple Singers, including "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There". Porter has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has also received numerous awards, including a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song for "Soul Man" and a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for "Hold On, I'm Comin'".
