Derek Bell is an Irish harpist, composer, and arranger. He is best known for his work with the Chieftains, an Irish traditional music group. He has also composed and arranged music for films, television, and theatre. Bell was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and began playing the harp at the age of seven. He studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, and later at the Royal College of Music in London. Bell has composed and arranged music for films such as The Last of the Mohicans, The Secret of Roan Inish, and The Wind That Shakes the Barley. He has also composed music for television series such as The Tudors and The Borgias. Bell has won numerous awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album for The Chieftains' album The Long Black Veil. He has also been nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the television series The Tudors. Bell is currently a member of the Chieftains, and continues to compose and arrange music for films, television, and theatre. He is also a professor of harp at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
