He is best known for his roles as Richard Alpert in the ABC drama series Lost, Mayor Anthony Garcia in the CBS series The Dark Knight Rises, and Luis Rivera in the Fox series The Tick. Carbonell was born on December 1, 1967 in New York City, New York. He is of Cuban and Spanish descent. He attended the Dalton School in New York City and graduated from Harvard University in 1989 with a degree in English and American Literature. Carbonell began his acting career in the early 1990s, appearing in the television series Law & Order and The Cosby Mysteries. He went on to appear in films such as The Mask of Zorro, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and The Dark Knight Rises. In 2004, Carbonell was cast as Richard Alpert in the ABC drama series Lost. He appeared in the series for six seasons, until its conclusion in 2010. He also appeared in the Fox series The Tick, playing the role of Luis Rivera. In addition to acting, Carbonell has also directed several episodes of television series, including Lost, The Tick, and The Good Place. Carbonell revealed on the Lost (2004) fifth season DVD extras that not only does he not wear eyeliner, mascara, or makeup of any kind to make his lashes and eyeline appear as dark as they do, but the makeup artists for "Lost" actually use concealer on his lashes and under his eyes to try to tone down the natural darkness of his eyeline. He also said that the unusual appearance of his eyes caused him to get teased and bullied when he was a child.
